Last summer I had the pleasure of teaching at an amazing retreat in Maine, hosted by Samantha Lindgren of A Gathering of Stitches. It truly was an unforgettable experience, as Samantha worked incredibly hard to make sure that everything was impeccable, from our accommodations to our workspace to our excursions and meals.
This summer I am so excited to return to Maine for another incredible retreat with Samantha. The Quilt Local retreat will take place June 22-June 26, 2016 at Saturday Cove Farm in Northport, Maine. Inspired by my book, Quilt Local: Finding Inspiration in the Everyday, this workshop will focus on helping you find your own inspiration, translate that inspiration into a sketch and ultimately a sewing pattern to construct your own completely unique and one of a kind quilt design. We will all stay together at the Victorian farmhouse and work together in the barn on the site. Doesn't it sound amazing already?! Plus, we'll have a private chef in-house who will create all of our meals so we don't have to worry about anything, other than being creative, finding inspiration, and having fun.
The retreat starts on Wednesday evening. I'm so looking forward to exploring our farmhouse and the surrounding gardens and grounds that overlook Penobscot bay.
On Thursday, our first day full-day together, I'll share my process of finding inspiration, how I gather it, and how I document and record it. Then we'll all go on an excursion together, around the small towns of coastal Maine to find our own inspiration, although I'm quite sure that there will be plenty of inspiration at the farm as well. We will return later in the day and head back to our barn to start on some rough sketches and flush out ideas while putting pen and pencil to paper.
On Friday, we'll use the raw materials that we gathered the day before, photos, drawings, swatches, etc., and I'll share how to make quilt designs from our inspiration, using our drawings, a sketchbook, pencils and markers, and simple math. We'll discuss how to develop the pattern pieces for our design and how to calculate yardage and fabric cuts. Once we're finished we'll head to Fiddlehead Artisan Supply for any fabric needs that may arise after our designs are finished.
On Saturday, the third day, we will spend the entire playing with our designs. We will begin to construct our quilt projects and get to work cutting out our patterns, and building the pieces together. It's going to be so exciting to see everyone's different projects finally coming to life.
Sunday will be our last day together and we'll get a chance to work more on our projects that day before saying our goodbyes and heading home in the afternoon.
Here are some more photos that I took while I was in Maine last year to give you an idea of the beautiful scenery that you'll see during our time together.
The registration for this workshop, as well as all of the other amazing retreats hosted by A Gathering of Stitches, opened today. As we want to keep this workshop small, there are only ten spots available, so please don't wait if you'd like to join us. You can find more information on the retreat on the AGOS website here.
