Although I frequently work with solid colored cotton fabrics, I really love beautiful printed designs, too. And there is nobody who makes more beautiful designs than my dear friend Amy Butler, and her newest collection of fabric, Splendor, for FreeSpirit Fabric, is no exception. I'm really excited to share a project I just finished using Splendor and one of Amy's great patterns.
I was asked by Amy and the folks at FreeSpirit to make a version of her Splendor Patchwork Pillow, which is a free pattern on Amy's website and I choose five of my favorite prints from the collection for the project. I was immediately drawn to the top print, Forest Friends in Midnight, with the figures, deer, birds, and big cats, so that was my starting point. I picked four other prints that I thought would work well with it, mixing from both of the colorways, Mystic and Celestial. Here is a closer look at all of the prints that I used.
The Splendor Patchwork Pillow is made up of four squares of bias cut strips in different widths that are then sewn together in a random order. I decided to add one solid (I just couldn't help myself), FreeSpirit Designer Solids in Mist, which is a creamy white that works well with all of the prints and provides a bit of breathing room between them.
I love the improvisational nature of this project because it encourages you to work intuitively while you are creating and the result is a completely unique, one of a kind design. The varying widths of fabric strips add a lot of movement throughout the block and the solid fabric frames the prints nicely. The Splendor Patchwork Pillow pattern includes instructions for 18", 20", 22", or 24" square pillows.
Aren't these colors amazing? I think the goldenrod and indigo are especially gorgeous together.
Here's the finished pillow at home on our sofa. I used a 20" feather insert and Forrest Friends in Midnight for the back of it. I love it so much that I think I'll be making a few more coordinating pillows for the rest of my living room furniture.
And now for the giveaway! The folks at FreeSpirit Fabric are giving away another set of these fabrics so you can make your own version of the Splendor Patchwork Pillow in the fabrics that I chose. To enter, please leave a comment below telling me which print is your favorite out of this group, and I'll randomly choose one winner. The giveaway will be open until Friday, February 3, 2017 at 7:00 ET. Please be sure to include your email address in your comment so I can contact you if you're the winner. Good luck!
